PHILADELPHIA –  The University of Dayton women’s basketball team dropped its second consecutive game by 20+ points when it fell 76-52 to Temple (21-6, 12-0 A-10) Saturday at the Liacouras Center in an Atlantic 10 matchup.

Sophomore Olivia Applewhite led the Flyers (16-10, 7-5 A-10) with 12 points, and also added five rebounds and a team-high three assists, tying her career high. Junior Elle Queen chipped in nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Cassie Sant had eight points with the help of 2-of-3 shooting from behind the three-point arc.

UD shot a season low 24.6 percent from the field (16-of-65) while the Owls were scorching the nets at 51.7 percent (30-of-58), including 53.3 percent from three-point range (8-of-15). Temple dominated in the paint outscoring UD 36-22. The Owls also edged Dayton on the boards, 41-39. They are only the fourth opponent to do so this season.

The 52 points tie a season-low for the Flyers. They also only put up 52 against Charlotte in their previous game. The 24-point loss is the worst for UD since their season-ending 92-64 loss to Tennessee in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Flyers struggled, offensively, only knocking down three field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Temple built a 21-6 lead on a B.J. Williams trey with 10:32 to play in the half. UD rallied to cut the lead to 27-19 after Kari Daugherty sank a three-pointer at the 6:30 mark and then converted two free throws seven seconds later. UD went on another scoring drought, not putting up any points for more than four minutes, until Kayla Moses’ driving layup at 2:11. Elle Queen hit a three from the top with 29 seconds to play in the half, but the Owls answered with a Qwedia Wallace trey with 11 seconds left to give Temple a 41-25 halftime lead.

The second half saw more of the same as Temple held its largest lead of the game, a 30-point margin, 58-28 with 14:04 to play in the game. Sant got the Flyers within 23 with back-to-back three pointers and a layup.

Five Owls scored in double figures and Shey Peddy led Temple with 17 points. The Owls also registered 12 blocks.

The Flyers continue their three-game Atlantic 10 road swing against Rhode Island on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. ET, before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 26 when Dayton hosts Fordham.
