Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mike Hauschild pitched seven innings with five strikeouts and Dayton posted a season-high nine runs to defeat USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon at Harley Park, 9-3.

Hauschild (2-0) earned his second win in as many starts on the mound while retiring a string of nine consecutive batters. The Beavercreek, Ohio native allowed no walks and three runs in seven innings pitched, while forcing 11 groundouts.

The Dayton (3-3) offense provided more than enough run support for Hauschild, bolstering a season-best nine runs and 12 hits. Junior centerfielder Bobby Glover went 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBI as senior catcher Danny Welch led the Flyers with three hits.

The Spartans (4-3) got on the board early with one run in the first inning. Three of USC Upstate’s first four batters reached base to drive in the first run on a fielder’s choice back to the pitcher. Dayton ended the inning with a 6-4-3 double-play to leave one runner on base. Hauschild held the Spartans scoreless for the next five innings, including three consecutive 1-2-3 innings.

The Flyes answered offensively with four runs in the second inning and a total of six unanswered runs in the next four innings. Welch led off the second with a double and junior Zach Stewart followed with a single to right field. Senior Jimmy Roesinger drove in Welch after reaching base on a throwing error by the third baseman. After two consecutive outs, the rest of UD’s runs were unearned in the inning. In the top of the order Hundley used a double to drive in Roesinger. Glover reached on a fly-ball error by the centerfielder, advancing to third and allowing Hundley to cross the plate.

UD added four more runs before the final out, three of which were driven in by Glover.

A triple with one out in the seventh inning for USC Upstate was able to fuel two more runs for the Spartans, but it wasn't enough to bridge a six-run deficit. Upstate was led by Blake Green's three hits and one RBI at the plate. Starting pitcher Gaither Bumgardner (0-1) pitched four innings with seven strikeouts, allowing five runs.

Sophomore Trent Haughn and senior Tim Corbey combined for UD's scoreless relief pitching effort in the eighth and ninth innings. Both Haughn and Corbey faced just four batters each.

It marks the first back-to-back wins of the season for the Flyers after defeating Gardner-Webb last night. The Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic concludes tomorrow for UD in a 1 p.m. ET first pitch at Wofford.
