Chris Johnson had 11 points and six rebounds as the Dayton Flyers fell to the Richmond Spiders 67-54 in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship game.
Juwan Staten added eight points and five assists,
Paul Williams scored eight and
Chris Wright tallied eight points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Wright and Johnson were named to the 2011 A-10 All-Tournament team.
In a tournament run that featured victories over Massachusetts, No. 18/20 Xavier and Saint Joseph’s, the Flyers brought themselves back into contention for postseason play.
In Dayton’s third appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship game, the Flyers struggled from the outside hitting 3-of-14 shots from beyond the arc. Dayton was 38 percent shooting from the floor against the top defense in the conference.
The Flyers cut a 15-point first-half deficit to five early in the second half, but they couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.
Trailing by six with 11:32 after Williams scored six straight points, UD couldn’t stop Richmond (27-7), which went on a 10-3 run to push the gap to 13 again.
The Spiders won their first league tourney title. The A-10 finals appearance was the Flyers’ third - their first at a venue other than UD Arena.
Richmond had 20 points off of Flyer turnovers and finished the game shooting 42 from the floor.
In the first half, Dayton started off slowly and trailed 34-24. The Flyers shot 42 percent from the field, but it was their defense that faltered. Richmond connected on eight of their 10 shots from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
The Flyers dropped to 22-13 overall.
