MALIBU, Calif. – University of Dayton baseball lost to Pepperdine on Friday evening at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif., 9-1.
Dayton (9-12) scored one run in the first inning as Jonathan Castine drove in C.J. Gillman on a sacrifice-fly. Eight innings and nine base runners later, it was still the Flyers’ lone run of the night as Pepperdine (11-10) extended its winnings streak to six games.
Junior Brain Blasik extended his hitting streak to six games after a 1-for-3 performance as the leadoff batter with one walk. Blasik made his first start of the season on March 15 after recovering from injury and has recorded a hit in every game since.
Senior Zach Blanchette made his first start of the season in left field and recorded his first hit of the season at the plate, finishing 1-for-3.
Junior left-handed pitcher Cameron Hobson (3-2) started on the mound for the Flyers, recording six strikeouts in six innings pitched. The Crawfordsville, Ind., native allowed no walks for the second consecutive outing and has allowed just one walk in his last four starts – 25 1/3 innings.
Jared Lee (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Pepperdine after throwing three scoreless innings and allowing three hits and three walks.
Four of the Waves’ nine unanswered runs came in the eighth inning as the first five batters of the inning reached base on four singles and a walk.
Pepperdine was led by the efforts of Harrison Kain who recorded three infield hits, three runs and a RBI. Kain stole two bases and scored a run in the third inning to give the Waves the go-ahead lead.
Dayton and Pepperdine resume a three-game series on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
