Dayton at High Point (DH) - Saturday, 1 p.m. ET

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point (5-5) scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning to pull ahead and defeat Dayton (4-4) on Friday night at Willard Stadium, 8-3.

Starting pitchers Cameron Hobson (1-1) of Dayton and Cody Allen of High Point battled just over seven innings each and allowed a combined three earned runs. Hobson tossed eight strikeouts with two earned runs and no walks through 7 1/3 innings. Allen threw nine strikeouts with one earned run after 7 2/3 innings of his no-decision outing.

“If not for Cameron Hobson, we are not in that game,” Head Coach Tony Vittorio said. “He threw great tonight, but the difference was the three errors we made and the way we competed offensively. We hardly put any pressure on their defense and that is a big part of our offensive philosophy.”

Hobson retired a string of 10 consecutive batters and had four 1-2-3 innings. His counterpart threw six scoreless innings before the Flyers posted one run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from junior Mike Coughlin to drive in senior Danny Welch.

UD would build on its offensive rally in the seventh inning as junior Bobby Glover reached with a single through the left side. After recording his second strikeout of the inning to retire the next Flyer in the seventh, Allen left the game in the hands of the High Point bullpen with two outs and a two-run Panther lead, 3-1.

High Point relief pitcher Mikel Rodenberg’s first batter was senior Jonathan Castine. Castine capped off Dayton’s rally by taking a full count pitch deep to right field for a two-run homerun to tie the game at three. The Farmington, Mich., native has hit two of Dayton’s three homeruns this season and finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

After Welch double in the next at-bat, High Point called on Kyle Wigmore (2-2) to close out the game. Welch tied a career-high of three hits for the sixth time on four trips to the plate.

The Panthers were able to take advantage of Dayton’s defensive missteps in the eighth inning to take a decisive 8-3 advantage. Two of the Flyers’ season-high three errors were recorded in the eighth as High Point posted five unearned runs to take the go-ahead lead.

The three-game series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The originally-scheduled Sunday game between High Point and Dayton was moved to Saturday due to a high chance of rain the forecast on Sunday.
