Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton baseball earned its third shutout of the season with a 4-0 win over Butler on Tuesday evening at Time Warner Cable Stadium.

Dayton improves to 17-16 with its third consecutive win, as Butler loses its third consecutive game and falls to 12-16 on the season.

Junior Tim Bury (1-2) started on the mound for the Flyers, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in the winning effort.

Early in the game, shortstop Jimmy Roesinger’s defense preserved the Flyers’ shutout in the second inning. With Butler in scoring position with runners on second and third base and one out, Roesinger leaped to catch a line drive and turned a double-double to second base to end the inning unscathed.

The Flyers then got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second for the go-ahead lead. Mel Skochdopole and Mike Coughlin led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Butler committed a throwing error on the next at-bat as Bobby Glover attempted a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, which instead allowed Skochdopole to score from second on the awry throw. UD tacked on two more runs in the inning on a Brian Blasik sacrifice fly and a C.J. Gillman ground-out RBI.

Blasik finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with his RBI in the second. The Germantown, Ohio native has a hit in every game this season but one.

Sophomore Ian Hundley scored the Flyers’ fourth run in the sixth inning. After reaching base on a single and later advancing on a wild pitch, Hundley stole third base and advanced home on the same play after a throwing error by Butler’s catcher. The unearned run was one of three unearned runs on the day for UD.

Hundley entered the game in the sixth inning for Glover, who moved from centerfield to pitcher. Glover threw two perfect innings for the Flyers with one strikeout to close the game.

Junior catcher Josh Jeffery made his first start of the season in place of Danny Welch. Welch had started the previous 39 consecutive games for the Flyers behind the plate (May 11, 2010-through-April 10, 2011).

Butler out-hit the Flyers 7-4, but left a total of 10 runners on base. 

The Flyers return to action tomorrow at Bowling Green State in a 3 p.m. ET first pitch.
