VALENTINO NAMED OFFENSIVE MVP OF OHIO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SENIOR BOWL II

Columbus -- Much like he did for four years in a Dayton football uniform, former University of Dayton quarterback/wide receiver Steve Valentino stole the show Saturday at the Ohio Army National Guard Senior Bowl II.  Valentino was named the game’s Offensive MVP as his South team was edged 19-16 at Crew Stadium in Columbus.

Valentino gained 125 yards in total offense to lead all players in the game.  While at quarterback, he completed five of nine passes for 95 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions.  He directed the South offense to both of its TD scores.  At wideout, he caught two passes for 39 yards, and at both positions he carried the ball 12 times for 30 yards.

The Solon, Ohio native was PFL Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. He finished his career 19-2 as a starting quarterback, and 15-1 in league play.  Just the fifth two-time MVP in UD football history, Valentino is also a three time All-PFL First Team selection, with two selections as a quarterback and one as a wide receiver. He is the only player in PFL history to receive first team honors at two different positions.

Flyer teammate Brandon Wingeier also played defensive end and linebacker in the game, but defensive stats were not available.

UD was 10-1 in 2010, finishing the year ranked 25th in both FCS polls.  Dayton tied for first in the Pioneer Football League with Jacksonville with an 8-0 record.  It was the Flyers second straight PFL title, and the 11th in the 18-year history of the league.
