WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington Nationals reliever and former Flyer
Craig Stammen played a big part in the Washington Nationals’
3-2 win over the Mets on Tuesday night – earning his first major-league win of the season and scoring the game-winning run.
In the Nationals’ 3-2 win over the Mets, Stammen pitched out of a sixth-inning jam, sparked a seventh-inning rally, scored the deciding run and earned his first win in the majors since Aug. 4, 2010. Stammen retired the first three batters he faced after entering the game on the mound in the sixth with no outs and two inherited runners. In the next inning, Stammen singled at the plate and was later driven in when Ryan Zimmerman singled to left which gave the Nats a go-ahead 3-2 lead.
Stammen was recently recalled from the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs on Sept. 6 – his second major-league visit this season. He has appeared in four games with the Nationals with a 1.93 ERA and 1-1 record. Stammen was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse for the start of the 2011 season, but still remained on the 40-man roster.
Stammen was drafted out of Dayton in the 12th round by the Nationals in 2005 and made his major league debut on May 21, 2009.
Oakland Athletics left-handed reliever and former Flyer
