WIRKUS NAMED COLLEGESPORTSMADNESS.COM?S PFL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CollegeSportsMadness.com has selected University of Dayton senior safety Steve Wirkus its Pioneer Football League Player of the Week for his play in Dayton’s 19-13 win at Robert Morris last Saturday.

Wirkus, a redshirt senior from Broadview Heights, Oh., intercepted a pass and was UD’s top tackler in only his second career start.  He had nine tackles, including seven solo hits.  His acrobatic interception late in the second quarter set up the Flyers’ go-ahead touchdown with 1:22 left in the first half.  He also made a diving deflection at the goal line of an RMU pass helped keep the Colonials off the scoreboard in the third quarter.

Dayton has won its last 10 games going back to last year’s PFL championship season.  The 10-game streak is the best active streak in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.  UD’s next game is its home opener, and is against the last team to defeat the Flyers, the Duquesne Dukes.  Saturday’s kickoff at Welcome Stadium is 1 p.m. ET.
