BLUFFTON, S.C. – In the Flyers’ first spring event of the season, Dayton placed in third at the UD/Hilton Head Spring Invitational.
After having its practice round rained out and not seeing the course until tournament day, the Flyers shot higher scores than normal.
“With three and a half inches of rain and having our practice time rained out, scores were high across the board,” head coach
Sally Kosters said. “Because it was our first outing, we had a lot of inconsistencies. We were constantly trying to shoot ourselves out of trouble.”
Dayton as a team shot a 360. Grace Nikolai led the way with an 88. Kelly Coakley and Heather Jorgensen each carded a 90.
Lucy Frey finished with a 92 and Maggie Prokop closed the team scoring with a 95.
Among Dayton’s individual players, Mary Katherine Slattery shot an 89 and Kelly Muskat fired a 97.
Appalachian State won the three-team tournament with a 326 team score. The Citadel’s Erica Pellegrini took medalist honors after shooting a 76.
Dayton returns to action March 25-26 at the Southern Illinois Saluki Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held in Carbondale, Ill.
“It’s not that unexpected to have high scores,” said Kosters. “We hope to have a better showing after a few more weeks of practice.”
