AMBLER, Pa. –
Mike Hauschild (6-2) threw his second consecutive complete game, allowing just one earned run, but Dayton lost its series-opening tilt at Temple on Friday evening at Skip Wilson Field, 3-1.
The Flyers fall to 21-25 and 10-6 in conference play after only their second conference setback on the road this season (5-2). Temple improves to 17-28 and 5-11 in the A-10.
Hauschild finished his fourth complete game of the season with three strikeouts, eight hits allowed and three walks. It is the fourth consecutive game that a Dayton pitcher has thrown a complete game.
UD, which lead the A-10 in team batting average, was held to a season-low three hits as Temple starting pitcher Dan Moller (1-5) threw his first career complete game after facing an efficient 30 batters on 96 pitches in the one-hour, 56-minute contest.
Dayton was retired in order during the first three innings, but scored first in the fourth as
Brian Blasik reached base on a two-out single to centerfield. Blasik stole second to advance into scoring position – his 27th steal of the season. On the next play,
C.J. Gillman reached on a throwing error by the shortstop on a routine grounder, also allowing Blasik to score an unearned run.
The Owls scored two unearned runs to take the go-ahead lead in the top of the fourth inning. Matt Elko drove in the game-tying run with a double to right field and Foster Dunigan drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to center. There was one Dayton error in the half inning.
Elko paced Temple on Friday, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m.ET from Skip Wilson Field.
