NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton all-time great Ann Meyers has been selected to be a part of the charter Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Legends Class. Consisting of a group of 16 former women's basketball student-athletes, the group is being recognized for their contributions to their institutions' basketball programs.
"Ann Meyers is not merely our first female student-athlete to receive a full athletic scholarship. As our all-time leading scorer and the leader of UD's first national championship team, she also set standards of excellence that current Flyers strive for every day," UD Vice-President and Director of Athletics Tim Wabler said. "She is the perfect choice to be our first Atlantic 10 Legend in women's basketball."
The greatest female student-athlete in University of Dayton history, Meyers was a two-sport All-American. She scored 2,672 points in her basketball career, one of 22 Dayton records she holds. All four of her seasons rank among the top ten single-season scoring marks at UD. The three-time basketball All-American closed out her career in storybook fashion. She led the Flyers to the 1980 AIAW Small College national championship by scoring a then school-record 40 points. At halftime of that game, she was awarded the Broderick Cup, which goes to the top women's volleyball player in the country.
The Women's Basketball Legends will be honored on March 16 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., the morning of the 2013 A-10 Women's Basketball Championship finals. Each honoree will be recognized during an awards brunch in the 40/40 Club, beginning at 11 am.
"I congratulate our inaugural class of Atlantic 10 Legends. These women have been instrumental in establishing the outstanding history of the A-10 women's basketball programs," stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. Individually each legend has become a role model for others as they competed and benefited from Title IX to elevate women's basketball within the A-10 and nationally. They are a credit to their institutions, the league and are deserving of this honor on behalf of the Atlantic 10 Conference. "
Each institution selected its Legend. The group is made up entirely of former players, all of which began their careers in 1976 or later. They represent 10 states and one foreign country and there are six All-Americans and three academic All-Americans among the honorees.
