DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball program held their annual Red Baron Classic series this past weekend to wrap-up the fall season.
"The Red Baron Series was an outstanding finish to a competitive fall season and a great start to preparing for the 2014 season," said head coach Tony Vittorio. "I am proud of our players' preparantion up to this point and looking forward to our team's development in the off season."
The "Blue Team" defeated the "Red Team" two games to one in the series.
Friday's game saw an offensive outburst by the Blue team as senior
Mark Podlas and freshman Nick Gobert provided the RBI in the win.
Saturday's contest was a defensive showcase as the pitching staff's dueled it out with runs hard to come by. The Blue team edged out a victory once again. Junior pitcher Noah Buettgen was effective on the mound and pitched his full 75-pitch limit.
On Sunday, sophomore pitcher Charlie Dant prevented a sweep by the Blue team, helping the Red team pick up its first win of the series.
The Blue team came out on top in the annual intersquad scrimmage.
Assistant Coach Matt Talarico talked about where the team is at this point in the season.
"We have a lot of new faces and a lot of spots up for grabs," Talarico stated. "Some guys stepped up and played well so it will be interesting to see who grabs those remaining spots heading into the spring. It was a really competitive series and wrapped-up a good fall season. The new guys have bought in well and some of them will have a chance to start"
The Flyers will open up the 2014 season on Feb. 14 at the Spartanburg Classic in South Carolina.
