Valparaiso, Ind. -- The University of Dayton football team scored touchdowns by air, on the ground, by kick return and by pass interception in Saturday's 45-20 win over Valparaiso.
Quarterback Will Bardo returned to the lineup after missing last week's Drake game with a sprained ankle, and threw two touchdown passes (a 72-yarder to Gary Hunter and a 63-yard score to Gabe Macis). Running back Connor Kacsor, who also missed the Drake trip due to a concussion, carried the ball 20 times for 105 yards, including a two-yard touchdown.
Gary Hunter became the first player in Dayton history to score four kick return touchdowns in his career when he opened the second half with a 100-yard kickoff return.
And the Flyers took the lead for good in the second quarter when they returned had "pick six" interceptions on back-to-back possessions. Safety Nick Weston took one back 35 yards to put UD up 17-10, and linebacker Colin Monnier brought his back 60 yards to give UD a 24-10 lead at halftime.
Bardo was 13 of 22 passing for 248 yards on the day. Hunter caught six of those passes for 133 of those yards. Kacsor's 105 yards gave him 966 yards on the year, even though he missed the Drake game and all but four plays of the Butler contest.
Linebackers Monnier and Christopher Beaschler each led UD with 10 tackles. Beaschler had six solo hits, while Monnier had two tackles in the backfield to go with his interception. Defensive ends Pat Dowd and Victor Kaczkowski combined for four sacks. Dowd added 2.5 to the FCS record six he had at Drake. Kaczkowski had 2.5 sacks and forced a fumble.
After back-to-back 6-5 seasons, Dayton finished the year 7-4, and 5-3 in the Pioneer Football League.
