DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team dropped its sixth game in the row after giving up 18 runs and 25 hits to the IPFW Mastodons Wednesday. The Flyers managed 10 runs and 13 hits of their own, but came up short, 18-10.
Leftfielder Aaron Huesman gave the Flyers the initial lead with an RBI single to left, scoring junior Robby Sunderman.
The Mastodons tied the game up in the second inning with a single run, then a three-run home run gave IPFW a 4-1 lead.
The visitors got three more runs off the Flyers in the third inning to make it a 7-1 Dayton disadvantage.
Five IPFW runs in the fourth made it 14-1 in favor of the Mastodons.
Dayton got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Mark Podlas, making it a 14-2 contest.
IPFW went on to score three runs in the fifth, pushing their advantage to 15 runs.
Junior Mark Podlas ripped a deep ball to right field for his third home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 14 runs.
Dayton got two runs on a defensive error by IPFW and an RBI groundout by Huesman in the seventh, making it 17-5 in favor of the Mastodons.
IPFW hit its fifth home run of the game in the eighth, a solo shot, extending the Mastodon lead to 18-5.
The Flyers continued to chip away at the deficit and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth. They got another on a bases loaded walk, making it 18-7.
Huesman then stepped up and provided his third and fourth RBIs of the game on a base- loaded single to left. Dayton batted through the line-up in the second to last inning and made it a single digit margin at 18-9.
Podlas then hit his second home run of the game and fourth of the year to right, making it an 18-10 affair in the bottom of the ninth.
Dayton was unable to make a full comeback however and dropped its sixth contest in a row, 18-10.
Junior Brock Trimbur (0-1) got his first start of the season after making his first five appearances out of the bullpen. The righty took the loss after giving up nine runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in three innings. Relievers Tommy Konrad, Trent Haughn, and Nick Weybright were effective in relief for Dayton, tossing a combined 3 2/3 shutout innings.
As a team, the Flyers allowed a season-high 25 hits and 18 runs.
Huesman led the Dayton offense with four RBIs and a 2-for-5 outing, while Podlas added three RBIs and Hundley added three hits.
The Flyers (7-21-1, 2-7 A-10) will stay at home for an Atlantic 10 series against conference newcomers Butler, starting Friday at 3 p.m.
