CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team lost the final game of the series with Xavier University, 12-4, making it a sweep for the Musketeers.
Xavier got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame with a pair of runs.
The Musketeers added to their lead in the second inning with a single run and did so once again in the third with two more runs. That pushed their advantage to 5-0.
Dayton was able to get on the board in the top of the fifth when senior Ian Hundley singled to lead off the inning and junior Robby Sunderman blasted a deep fly ball to left that cleared the fences for a two-run home run.
Xavier got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Flyers remained within striking distance.
In the sixth inning, the Musketeers continued to cause problems for the UD pitchers and added six more runs to their tally. The score was then 12-2.
Junior Ryan Berry drove in Dayton's third run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, plating Sunderman. Junior Mark Podlas then stepped up and added an RBI single of his own, making it a 12-4 contest.
The Dayton offense continued to put runners on base, but they were not able to capitalize down the stretch. Xavier took the final game and the series with a 12-4 victory.
Freshman Charlie Dant (1-3) picked up the loss for the Flyers after giving up eight runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings on the mound. Reliever Nate Harris pitched well out of the bullpen, tossing 1 1/3 shutout innings.
Offensively, Dayton managed 14 hits, including six players with multi-hit games. Sunderman led the way with two RBIs and a 3-for-4 outing, while Berry and Podlas provided the other RBIs.
The Flyers (7-19-1, 2-7 A-10) will head to Toledo Tuesday, April 9 for a break from conference action. That contest will start at 3 p.m.
