DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's and women's cross country teams will open up their 2013 seasons this weekend when they host the Flyer 5K at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Saturday, Aug. 31.
Starting the day off at 10:45 a.m. is the Men's Intercollegiate and Alumni 5000 Meter Race. At 11:15 a.m., the Women's Intercollegiate and Alumni 5000 Meter Race will begin. The awards ceremony is expected to take place at 12 p.m.
The men's team has a somewhat new line-up after graduating seven guys from last year's squad as the newcomers look to prove themselves in a competitive race. For the women, Dayton has a veteran group with three seniors and five juniors.
Teams that will be competing on the men's side are Ohio State, Wright State, Xavier, Miami, Wittenberg, Northern Kentucky, Denison, IUPUI, Cincinnati Christian, and Dayton.
On the women's side, the schools that are racing are Ohio State, Cincinnati Christian, Denison, Northern Kentucky, Wittenberg, Xavier, IUPUI, Wright State, and Dayton.
Men's head coach Rich Davis talked about the importance of this first event.
"Men's and women's cross country really would like to establish a presence on campus and in the UD community," Coach Davis stated. "This is the only opportunity we have for that. It is our only home meet. It's the first meet of the season for the area Division I schools. There are quality teams out there trying to prove their regional standings. We are not ranked so we are trying to prove we belong with them."
