DAYTON BASEBALL WINS SEASON OPENER WITH 10-RUN SIXTH INNING

Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team opened up the 2014 season at Wofford on Saturday with a 14-5 victory over the Terriers after 10 runs in the sixth sealed the Flyers' fate.

The Flyers were eager to get the season underway and had to wait an extra day after inclement weather pushed the weekend's games back a day. For the first time since the 2005 season, Dayton came out victorious in the season opener, a nine-year drought.

"It was a good team win," said head coach Tony Vittorio. "Buettgen and Gobert pitched competitively on the mound, we defended well, and had some reallyl good at-bats from several players, especially Aaron Huesman. We were able to put pressure on Wofford on the base path."

Dayton managed to put a runner on second in both the first and second innings, but was unable to capitalize on the base runners.

In the top of the third inning, senior Robby Sunderman reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. After a walk by junior Alex Harris to put runners on first and second, junior AJ Ryan ripped a single through the right side, scoring Sunderman from second. That gave Dayton a 1-0 lead.

The next batter, sophomore Aaron Huesman, chipped in with an RBI single of his own, plating Harris and putting the Flyers up 2-0.

With the two-run advantage, Dayton was hoping to settle in defensively heading into the bottom of the third. Wofford had other plans though and scored a pair of runs of its own to even the score at 2-2. One of the two runs was unearned due to a Flyer error.

That score would remain until the bottom of the fifth when the Terriers took a 3-2 lead on an RBI single.

In the top of the sixth, Dayton would get its third run of the contest after junior Zach Schira walked to reach first, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Greg Rhude, then went to third on a Wofford error. Rhude then advanced to third on a passed ball before senior Ryan Berry walked, loading the bases with nobody out.

The Flyers were able to take advantage of the situation when fifth-year senior Kuris Duggan recorded an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. That marked his first RBI since 2012 after sitting out last season due to an injury.

Sunderman and Harris both followed up Duggan's hit by drawing bases-loaded walk to give Dayton a 5-3 lead.

To finish off the inning, Huesman stepped up with two outs and the bases loaded, and launched a pitch to deep left field. The ball left the yard and Huesman recorded a grand slam, the first of his career. With four more runs, Dayton started to pull away with a 9-3 lead.

The Flyers were not done in the inning though as Berry added a two-run single to center, scoring Schira and Rhude to make it 11-3 in favor of Dayton. Duggan got his second RBI of the inning after that with an RBI double to left-center.

Dayton went into the inning down one run and ended the sixth with a 12-3 lead over the host Terriers.

Starting pitcher Noah Buettgen carried that momentum over into the bottom half of the inning and retired all three Terrier batters in order.

Huesman continued is offensive assault in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run to left, recording RBI's No. 6 and No. 7 in the contest. That extended Dayton's lead to 11 at 14-3.

Wofford got a run back in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but it was not enough as the Flyers cruised to a 14-5 victory in their first contest of the 2014 season.

Dayton's Buettgen (1-0) got the nod for the Flyers and picked up the first win of the season after giving up just two runs in six innings of work while striking out five and walking just one. Nick Gobert came in in relief of Buettgen and pitched the final three innings. Combined, the Flyers allowed just two walks in the game.

Senior Jesse Morris (0-1) suffered the loss for Wofford (0-1) after giving up four runs in just 1/3 of an inning.

Huesman's seven RBI matches the Atlantic 10 season-high from last season, which was last accomplished by Kevin Stenhouse from Rhode Island on May 12. It also marks the first multi-home run game by a Flyer since Mark Podlas did it against IPFW on April 10 of last season.

As a team, Dayton recorded 11 hits in the game and drew nine walks. Huesman led the way with a 3-for-6 outing and two runs scored, while Duggan, Berry, and Sunderman had two-hit games as well. Berry and Duggan chipped in two RBI apiece to go with Huesman's seven. Sunderman also stole three bases in the contest.

The Flyers (1-0) will next take on host USC-Upstate on Sunday at 11 a.m.
