NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced their weekly baseball awards and recognized University of Dayton sophomore
Aaron Huesman as the Co-Player of the Week in the conference.
In the first release of the 2014 season, Huesman shared Player of the Week honors with George Mason's Chris Cook. Saint Louis pitcher Nick Bates was named Pitcher of the Week while VCU's Matt Davis was named Rookie of the Week.
Huesman had a career weekend at the Spartanburg Classic after totaling nine RBI and five hits in nine at-bats. The sophomore designated hitter started the weekend off with a 3-for-6 outing in which he racked up two home runs, including a grand slam, and seven RBI. That total matched the highest single-game RBI total by an individual in 2013 (Stenhouse, Rhode Island).
On Sunday, Huesman followed up his breakout performance with a 2-for-3 outing, driving in Dayton's only two runs in the contest. He finished the two-game stretch with a .556 batting average and a 1.222 slugging percentage.
The Flyers split their weekend series 1-1 after defeating Wofford on Saturday (14-5) and falling to USC-Upstate on Sunday (13-2).
Last season as a true freshman, Huesman was named Dayton Baseball's Newcomer of the Year. This is his first Atlantic 10 accolade.
Dayton (1-1) plays Ball State Monday at noon.
