NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference released their weekly awards for baseball and recognized a pair of University of Dayton student-athletes for their accomplishments on the diamond this past weekend.
Sophomore pitcher
Charlie Dant was named Co-Pitcher of the Week while freshman pitcher
Mark Giesler was named Rookie of the Week.
Dant pitched his first complete game of his career against Belmont on Sunday, earning Dayton a 4-1 win over the Bruins. In nine innings, the sophomore righty gave up just one run and walked only two, while striking out seven batters. He needed just 120 pitches to go the distance and even Dayton's record at 3-3 on the year. Dant earned his second victory of the season (2-0) and now boasts an ERA of 2.25.
Giesler had an outstanding collegiate debut for the Flyers, pitching three shutout innings at Middle Tennessee State this weekend. In his first outing for Dayton, the Jasper, Ind. native came out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out one in his appearance. He held opposing hitters to a .100 average as well. The 6-4 righty is expected to be a big part of the Dayton bullpen this season.
VCU's James Bunn was named A-10 Player of the Week while La Salle's Joey Ravert joined Dant as Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Giesler and Dant join sophomore
Aaron Huesman as A-10 award winners this year. Huesman was named Co-Player of the Week (Feb. 17) in the first week of the season.
The Flyers are 3-3 on the season and will travel to Kentucky Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest against the Wildcats.
