Box Score
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Dayton baseball team took on Austin Peay Friday to open up the 2014 Riverview Inn Classic and dropped an 8-5 decision to the Governors.
The Flyers were eager to get back to action after having both of their midweek games postponed due to weather conditions in Dayton.
Austin Peay struck first in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs and taking the initial lead on a pair of home runs.
Dayton got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth when junior
Alex Harris ripped a double down the left-field line, scoring seniors
Kuris Duggan and
Robby Sunderman. That made it a 4-2 ball game in Austin Peay's favor.
Sophomore
Luke Wolford continued the inning with an RBI double to right, cutting the deficit for the Flyers to just one run.
In the top of the sixth, Duggan stepped and tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single to right, scoring senior
Mark Podlas.
The tie was short-lived though as the Governors pulled back ahead with a single run in the bottom half of the inning. They added three more with two home runs in the seventh to push their lead back to four at 8-4.
A sacrifice fly by Wolford in the top of the ninth made it an 8-5 contest, but Dayton was unable to complete the rally as they fell to Austin Peay by that score.
Starting pitcher
Noah Buettgen (1-2) was stuck with the loss after allowing seven runs on 14 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Freshman
Garrett Atkinson had a shutout inning out of the bullpen for the Flyers.
Dayton totaled 12 hits in the game, but allowed 15 to the Governors. Harris and Wolford led the way with two RBI each while Duggan added the other. Harris, Sunderman, and Duggan also had 2-for-4 outings for Dayton as well.
UD did not commit an error in the game
The Flyers (3-4) will play two games on Saturday with rain in the forecast for Sunday. Dayton takes on former Atlantic 10 rival Xavier at 11:30 a.m. ET followed by a game against Bradley at 3:30 p.m. ET.
