OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team traveled southwest to Miami University for a contest with the RedHawks on a windy evening in Oxford, but unfortunately suffered an 8-4 defeat.
 The Flyers got off to a fast start with single runs in the first and second innings. Junior
Alex Harris put Dayton on the board in the first with an RBI double down the left-field line. Senior
Robby Sunderman added to the advantage in the second with an RBI double of his own. That gave UD a 2-0 lead in the beginning stages of the contest.
Miami quickly responded in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs, evening the score at 2-2.
Neither team made a dent in the score in the third, but the host RedHawks managed to take their first lead of the game with a single run in the fourth.
Dayton tied it back up in the sixth when senior
Ryan Berry scored on a wild pitch by Miami. That made it a 3-3 ball game.
The RedHawks didn't take long to climb back on top with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Miami took their biggest lead of the game at three runs. They threatened to score further, but a steal attempt at home was negated by a nice block of the plate by senior catcher
Kuris Duggan.
Despite the score, Dayton matched Miami hit-for-hit through the first six innings of the contest.
In the seventh, the RedHawks pulled further away with an inside-the-park home run.
Senior
Kuris Duggan got the run back in the top of the eighth with an RBI single to right-center, plating junior
Greg Rhude. That narrowed the gap to three at 7-4.
A run in the bottom of the eighth put Miami back up four, and that would be all the RedHawks would need to down the Flyers.
Dayton dropped an 8-4 decision for its ninth straight loss.
Starting pitcher
Joe Wahl (0-4) battled the elements and had a decent outing for the Flyers, giving up four earned runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Dayton had a productive day offensively, totaling nine hits. Sunderman had an outstanding day, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Rhude chipped in a 2-for-4 outing as well.
The Flyers (3-12) will return to Dayton for the rest of the weekend as they host Canisius on Saturday at 12 p.m.
