DAYTON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT OVER CANISIUS SUNDAY

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team picked up its second win over Canisius in as many days with a 5-3 victory over the Golden Griffins on Sunday.

With windy conditions and temperatures in the 30's, both teams got off to a slow start offensively. Neither Dayton nor the Golden Griffins were able to put a run on the board through the first two innings.
Canisius was able to take a 1-0 lead in the third, scoring on a UD error.

The Flyers tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by junior Sergio Plasencia. Sophomore Aaron Huesman then put Dayton on top with an RBI single to left. Then a double-steal by junior Zach Schira of second and Huesman of home gave the Flyers a 3-1 advantage.

The Grifs scored twice in the fifth frame to tie the score back up at 3-3.

The sixth and seventh innings went by without either team making a dent in the score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Dayton got a crucial two-out, two-run double by senior Mark Podlas to give the Flyers a 5-3 lead with just one at-bat remaining for Canisius.

Starting pitcher Charlie Dant had gone the first eight innings and started the ninth for UD. He got one out before giving way to senior Nate Harris for the final two outs. Harris retired the final two batters and earned his first save of the season.

Dant (3-2) finished with three runs allowed, two earned, on five hits in 8 1/3 innings of work. Harris (S, 1) had 2/3 of inning for the save.

Podlas had the two important RBI to give Dayton its final lead while Plasencia and Huesman chipped in one apiece. Sunderman had a multi-hit game for the third straight contest, going 2-for-3.

Dayton totaled six hits in the game and stole seven bases. Canisius was held to just five hits.

The Flyers (5-12)will travel to Ball State next for a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
