XENIA, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team took on the University of Toledo on Wednesday at Athletes In Action Field in Xenia and suffered a tough 11-6 loss to the Rockets.
Toledo got on the board with a single run in the first, before adding four runs on a grand slam in the second to take a 5-0 lead.
The Flyers got a run back in the bottom of the second on junior
Greg Rhude's RBI single to left-center.
The Rockets added two more runs in the third to make it a 7-1 contest.
Junior
Zach Schira recorded a sacrifice fly in the third to cut the deficit to five runs.
In the fourth and sixth innings, Toledo added two runs in both at-bats, pushing the game further out of Dayton's reach.
The Flyers got a single run in the sixth on senior
Mark Podlas' solo home run, his second of the year. Dayton added another run in the seventh with an RBI single by sophomore
Aaron Huesman.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Flyers started their rally with two runs, but it would not be enough as UD fell short of Toledo, 11-6.
Starting pitcher Matt Giesler (0-1) got his first collegiate start, but was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs on four hits in two innings.
Relievers
Nick Weybright,
Nate Harris, and
Robby Sunderman were all effective out of the bullpen with each Flyer tossing a shutout inning.
Dayton managed to out-hit Toledo despite the loss.
Offensively, Plasencia led the way with a 3-for-4 outing, an RBI and two runs scored. Podlas added a home run and a 2-for-4 day while Sunderman and Rhude had multi-hit games as well. Schira chipped in two RBI on a pair of sacrifice flies.
The Flyers (5-13) will now head into the Atlantic 10 season as they host Richmond this weekend in a three-game series starting Friday.
