DAYTON’S DAY SPOILED BY FOUR-RUN NINTH

Box Score
FAIRBORN, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team faced Bradley for the second time this season and dropped its second game to Braves, 8-5.

The Flyers had a rough start in their loss to Wright State Friday, but that was not the case for the Dayton defense on Saturday.

Starting pitcher Joe Wahl was in search of his first win of the season and was unhittable over the first three innings of the contest.

Bradley was able to put a pair of runs on the board in the fourth inning after a walk and a trio of singles. UD trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

The Flyers got both runs back in the bottom half of the inning when junior Zach Schira ripped a two-run double to left-center, plating juniors Sergio Plasencia and Alex Harris. Junior Greg Rhude followed that up with an RBI double of his own to give Dayton the 3-2 lead. Freshman Nick Gobert added to the Flyer advantage with an RBI single to right, making it a 4-2 contest.

The Braves closed the gap in the fifth with a solo home run and back-to-back doubles, evening the score at 4-4.

Senior Ryan Berry put Dayton back on top in the sixth with his second home run in as many games, a solo shot to deep left. It was Berry's second home run of the season as well.

Wahl held off Bradley as much as he could before giving way to freshman reliever Garrett Atkinson. Atkinson came in with runners on second and third and one out and got the Flyers out of the jam.

Dayton loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with a chance to pull away, but was unable to capitalize.

The Braves extended the game in the top of the ninth by loading the bases, then drawing a hit-by-pitch to tie the score at 5-5. Bradley then took the lead back with a pair of hits, taking an 8-5 advantage.

After leading since the sixth inning, the Flyers suffered their fifth-straight loss after an 8-5 defeat at the hands of the Braves.

Wahl was productive as the starter for Dayton, allowing just four runs and striking out four in 7 1/3 innings of work. Atkinson (0-1) pitched well in the eighth, but suffered the loss for the Flyers after giving up two runs in the ninth.

Offensively, Dayton totaled nine hits in the contest and left six runners stranded. Schira led the Flyers with a 3-for-4 outing and two RBI while Berry, Rhude, and Gobert chipped in an RBI apiece. UD did not draw a walk in the game.

The Flyers (3-8) will meet Bradley for the third and final time on Sunday at 12 p.m. followed by a contest against Wright State at 3 p.m.
