Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team opened up its series with Rhode Island on Friday with an 8-3 win over the Rams.
Rhode Island took the initial lead in the first inning with a single run, taking advantage of a pair of walks.
The Flyers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first thanks to junior AJ Ryan's RBI single to left that plated junior
Alex Harris from second.
The pitching staffs settled in over the next five innings as neither team made a dent in the score.
Dayton's offense came alive in the bottom of the seventh when redshirt freshman
Glenn Jones blasted a pitch to deep right center for a two-run triple, giving the Flyers a 3-1 lead. Senior
Robby Sunderman added another run to Dayton's lead with an RBI double to left, scoring Jones and making it a three-run game.
The inning was not done though as Harris, Ryan, and sophomore
Aaron Huesman all contributed RBI singles to increase the Flyers' advantage to 7-1.
Junior
Sergio Plasencia piled on another run in the eighth with an RBI single to right. That made it a 8-1 ball game.
Rhode Island scored a pair of runs in the ninth, but it was not enough of a comeback as Dayton cruised to an 8-3 win over the Rams.
Starter
Joe Wahl went 4 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing just one run on two hits, putting the Flyers in a good position going into the second half of the game. Reliever
Bryce Lahrman (3-1) came in to pitch after Wahl and tossed 3 2/3 no-hit, shutout innings for the victory.
Dayton totaled nine hits as a team in the contest and batted through the line-up in the fateful seventh. Jones and Ryan led the way with two hits and two RBI each, while Jones and Harris each scored twice.
The Flyers (14-17, 6-4 A-10) will face off against the Rams again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
