FLYERS POWER PAST FIRST-PLACE SAINT JOSEPH’S IN SERIES OPENER

Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Dayton baseball team squared off against Saint Joseph's on Thursday and opened the three-game series with a 6-1 win over the Hawks.

Neither team made a dent in the score through the first two innings, but host Saint Joseph's was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the third.

That lead would hold until the top of the fifth when Dayton scored a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Robby Sunderman started things off with an RBI double to left center before junior Alex Harris followed with an RBI groundout to third.

The Flyers extended their lead in the sixth with four more runs, making it a 6-1 ball game in Dayton's favor. The offensive assault began with an RBI single by senior Kuris Duggan. Junior Sergio Plasencia piled on another run with an RBI single to third. With the bases loaded, Harris then drew a walk and senior Ryan Berry was hit by a pitch to finish off the scoring.

Dayton's pitching staff combined to keep the Hawks in check the rest of the contest and maintained the Flyers' advantage.

In the end, UD won its fifth straight contest by a score of 6-1.

Starter Joe Wahl (0-4) was strong through the first six innings, allowing just a single run. He finished with just three hits allowed in 6 2/3 innings while striking out a pair. Senior Bryce Lahrman and sophomore Nick Weybright finished off Saint Joseph's over the final 2 1/3 innings.
