Box Score TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team faced Toledo on Wednesday and suffered a 5-4 loss at the hands of the Rockets.
In the top of the third inning, the Flyers produced a trio of singles with sophomore
Aaron Huesman's hit to left providing the first run of the ball game.
Toledo answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the third to tie the game at 1-1.
Dayton jumped back on top in the fifth with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by Huesman and an RBI double to right-center by senior
Mark Podlas. That gave the Flyers a two-run advantage.
In the top of the sixth, junior
Alex Harris made it a three-run game with an RBI double to left.
The Rockets tied the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth with a couple of hits before taking their first lead of the game on a wild pitch.
After leading the majority of the contest, Dayton was unable to produce a run to help their cause in the ninth inning and fell to Toledo 5-4.
Freshman starter
Brad Burkhart had an outstanding performance, giving up just one run on five hits in seven innings, but did not get the decision. Reliever
Charlie Dant (4-5) suffered the loss after allowing the final run in the eighth.
Offensively, UD totaled nine hits in the contest while Toledo had eight hits. Huesman anchored the team with two RBI while Podlas and Harris had the others. Harris and freshman
Matt Poland both had two-hit games for Dayton as well.
The Flyers (18-20, 9-6 A-10) will return to Atlantic 10 action this weekend when they host St. Bonaventure for a three-game series starting Friday.
