Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team opened its series with St. Bonaventure on Friday with a close 10-9 loss to the Bonnies.
In the bottom of the first, junior AJ Ryan put Dayton on top early with an RBI single to right. Sophomore
Aaron Huesman then followed up with a two-run single to center, putting the Flyers ahead 3-0.
It didn't take long though as St. Bonaventure answered with two runs in the second to cut the deficit to one run. In the third frame, the Bonnies evened the score up at 3-3 after an attempted squeeze play resulted in a steal of home.
SBU continued to produce runs in the fourth and took a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly. Three more runs in the fifth made it a 7-3 game in the visitors' favor.
The Dayton offense came back alive in the bottom of the fifth when junior
Alex Harris hit a shot to right field that cleared the fences for a three-run home run. That pulled the Flyers back within a run.
The Bonnies extended their lead once again the sixth and seventh with single runs, making it a 9-6 ball game.
The Flyers started their rally in the eighth with an RBI single by junior
Sergio Plasencia.
St. Bonaventure quickly responded in the ninth with a run of their own to keep the margin at three runs.
Dayton looked to make a run in the ninth as junior
Greg Rhude it a two-run blast to right, narrowing the gap to a single run with just one out. Unfortunately, the Flyers were not able to get the tying run before their at-bat expired and the Bonnies picked up the 10-9 victory.
Starter
Joe Wahl (1-5) was stuck with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Offensively, Dayton totaled 13 hits and nine runs in the contest. Harris led the way with three RBI and two hits while Huesman and Rhude added two RBI apiece.
The Flyers (18-21, 9-7 A-10) will host the Bonnies again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
