Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team completed it series with La Salle on Sunday in dramatic fashion as
Kuris Duggan's three-run home run in the eighth gave the Flyers a 9-7 win over the Explorers.
After splitting the first two games of the series, Dayton and La Salle were both wanting to win Sunday's contest in order to keep the playoff hopes alive.
The Flyers didn't take long to open up the game as senior
Robby Sunderman led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left. It was his first of the season and 19
th RBI.
La Salle answered in the second with two runs of its own, taking a 2-1 lead over UD.
In the bottom of the third, Dayton took back the lead with a two-run double off the right field wall, plating Sunderman and junior
Sergio Plasencia. That put the Flyers on top of the Explorers, 3-2.
The fourth inning saw La Salle tie the game up at 3-3 with a solo home run. The Explorers managed to take the lead again in the sixth with an RBI triple.
This time, it was Dayton's turn to start a rally as junior
Alex Harris ripped an RBI double to right, evening the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
That is when junior AJ Ryan stepped up and blasted a pitch over the rightfield wall for a two-run home run. The Flyers now led by two runs.
The Explorers weren't going away though and a solo home run to lead off the eighth. La Salle added another home run in the inning, a two-run shot to left, to pull ahead of UD, 7-6.
Just as the rest of the game had gone though, the Flyers were not going to give up and rallied again in the bottom of the eighth. Senior
Kuris Duggan stepped up with runners on first and second and rocketed the first pitch he saw over the leftfield fence and off the scoreboard, putting Dayton on top, 9-7.
Friday's starting pitcher
Noah Buettgen came on to pitch the ninth inning and shutout the Explorers, sealing the victory for UD.
Starter
Joe Wahl pitched the first four innings and allowed three runs on four hits before giving way to the bullpen. Senior
Bryce Lahrman relieved Wahl and pitched the next 3 1/3 innings in which he gave up four runs on five hits. Weybright (2-4) earned the win for his 2/3 inning of work while Buettgen (S, 1) earned his first career save with a shutout ninth.
In the contest, Dayton matched La Salle with 11 hits, but had the bigger hits late in the game. The lead changed hands seven times on Sunday, but the Flyers held the final advantage.
Duggan's three-run home run led the way while Ryan contributed four RBI and a 3-for-5 outing. Sunderman and Harris also drove in a run and scored for Dayton.
