Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team scored five runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, but was unable to score any further as the Flyers dropped an 8-5 decision to George Mason.
The Patriots took the initial lead in the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. George Mason doubled its lead in the fourth with an RBI single before a three-run triple put the Flyers in a 5-0 deficit.
Dayton exploded offensively in the bottom of the fourth with four straight doubles by junior
Alex Harris, junior AJ Ryan, sophomore
Aaron Huesman, and redshirt freshman
Glenn Jones. Ryan's plated Harris and Huesman's scored Ryan to make it a 5-2 ball game.
The inning continued as junior
Greg Rhude added a sacrifice fly, senior
Ryan Berry hit an RBI single to left, and senior
Kuris Duggan contributed an RBI double to right. That evened the score at 5-5.
What made the inning more noteworthy was the fact it came against one of the top pitchers in the conference in Anthony Montefusco, who entered the contest with a 1.76 ERA and hadn't allowed more than five runs in an entire game.
George Mason took the lead back in the sixth with a trio of runs, making it an 8-5 contest.
The Flyers had three more opportunities to cut into the margin, but were retired 1-2-3 in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. Dayton fell by a final score 8-5.
Starter
Joe Wahl (1-7) went 5 1/3 innings before giving way to the bullpen. The senior gave up seven runs on eight hits while striking out three. Freshman
Nick Gobert entered the game in the sixth and pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
Dayton totaled eight hits in the game, six of which came in the fourth inning. Jones led the way with a 2-for-4 outing while Ryan, Huesman, Rhude, Berry, and Duggan each had an RBI.
The Flyers (23-27, 13-12 A-10) will continue their series with the Patriots on Friday with a 1 p.m. start time.
