DAYTON HEADS INTO A-10 TOURNEY ON HIGH NOTE WITH 2-1 WIN

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team ended the regular season on Saturday with a 2-1 win over George Mason, sending the seniors off in style with the victory.

Before the game Sunday, the University of Dayton recognized the achievements of the 2014 senior class with a ceremony honoring the student-athletes. The Flyers have 10 seniors this year, including multiple four-year players.

That got the Flyers pumped up for the start of the contest as Dayton sat down the Patriots in order, 1-2-3, in the top of the first.

George Mason to put a run on the board in the second after loading the bases with no outs, but Dayton prevented any further scoring.

The Flyers tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth when junior Alex Harris scored on a Patriot error.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dayton took its first lead of the game with a solo home run by junior Sergio Plasencia, his second of the season. That put the Flyers on top, 2-1.

The UD bullpen held on to that slim lead and held George Mason in check for the rest of the contest.

In the end, Dayton recorded a 2-1 win over the Patriots, giving the seniors one last victory at Woerner Field.

Starter Charlie Dant (6-5) pitched just three innings due to the Flyers already being in the A-10 Tournament and allowed just one run on four hits. Senior Bryce Lahrman tossed the next two innings without allowing a run followed by freshman Mark Giesler (W, 2-1), who pitched 2 2/3 no-hit, shutout innings.  Sophomore Nick Weybright (S, 4) closed out the game and didn't allow a hit or run in 1 1/3 innings.

Dayton was out-hit in the game 7-6, but benefited from four Patriot walks. Plasencia recorded the big RBI in the contest with the home run while going 2-for-4. Senior Mark Podlas had a two-hit game as well.

The Flyers (24-28, 14-13 A-10) have completed the regular season and will now head to St. Louis Wednesday for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament.
