Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Dayton baseball team opened up its Atlantic 10 series at Saint Louis on Friday with a 7-4 loss.
The host Billikens jumped out ahead of the Flyers early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first.
Dayton got two runs back in the third with a two-run single to left by sophomore
Aaron Huesman. That made it a 3-2 ball game.
Saint Louis added to its lead in the fourth and fifth innings with two runs in each frame. The Billikens held a 7-2 lead over the visiting Flyers.
In the top of the sixth, junior
Greg Rhude drove in Huesman with an RBI groundout to narrow the gap to four runs.
Senior
Kuris Duggan continued the Flyers' comeback attempt in the eighth inning with an RBI single to left, making it a 7-4 contest.
In the top of the ninth, the Flyers managed to load the bases with just one out, but they were left stranded by the Saint Louis bullpen.
The Dayton rally fell short however as the Flyers were unable to get the final few runs to even the score. UD dropped a 7-4 decision to the Billikens.
Starter
Nick Gobert (3-2) allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings before giving way to the bullpen. Senior
Bryce Lahrman tossed a perfect fifth inning in relief while
Joe Wahl threw three shutout innings to close out the game.
Offensively, Dayton outhit Saint Louis with 13 hits, but left 12 runners stranded. Huesman led the way with two RBI and a 3-for-5 outing.
Alex Harris contributed three hits as well.
The Flyers (19-23, 10-9 A-10) will continue their series with Saint Louis at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday.
