Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Dayton men's soccer team continues their recent run of success with a 5-0 win over IUPUI Friday night in Indianapolis.
"The team played very well tonight," said Head Coach
Dennis Currier. "We were relentless with our pressure all night. Offensively, we scored some excellent goals tonight through accurate passing and timely runs. Our defense has now posted four straight shutouts. Our focus now shifts to the Maryland game."
It didn't take long for the Flyers to strike as sophomore
Michael Frasca drilled a shot from 10 yards out, past the IUPUI goalkeeper in the seventh minute for the opening goal of the contest. Junior
Amass Amankona picked up his second assist of the season on the play while the goal was Frasca's first.
The quick goal got rid of any early game jitters the Flyers may have had and Dayton continued to control the game from then on.
In the 24
th minute, sophomore
Brian Richards doubled the Flyers' lead with his third goal of the season. Freshman
Dillon Nino provided a nice cross into the box where Richards waited seven yards out to bank the shot off the left post and in. Through the first 30 minutes of the contest, Dayton held a 2-0 lead despite being outshot 6-4.
The Flyers were not done scoring the first half either as Amankona converted from the penalty spot after a foul in the box by IUPUI in the 41
st minute. It was the junior from Ghana's first goal of the season and gave Dayton a commanding lead heading into halftime.
The first 45 minutes so 20 total shots, 11 from the Flyers, and 11 fouls, nine from the Jaguars.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, grad student
Daniel Spencer picked up his first goal of the season as well on a shot from close range off the cross from sophomore
Andrew Lightner. That extended Dayton's lead even further to 4-0.
Amankona recorded his second goal of the game in the 71
st minute when he collected a pass from junior
Maik Schoonderwoerd and dribbled past the goalkeeper on the counter.
Dayton controlled the tempo of the contest from start to finish and ended the evening Friday with a 5-0 victory over IUPUI. The win was the Flyers third in the last four games and the fourth straight shutout for the defense.
Amankona led the way with two goals and an assist while recording seven shots while Frasca, Richards, and Spencer provided one goal each. Nino, Lightner, and Schoonderwoerd added assists as well. Goalkeeper Chris Frouschauer had one save out 14 total shots by IUPUI, who had just one attempt on goal.
Dayton out-shot the Jaguars 23-14 in the contest and had nine on target. IUPUI also committed 23 fouls in the game.
The Flyers (3-2-1) will head east to take on 2013 National Runner-Up Maryland at 7 p.m. Monday.
