DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will play in the 2015 Atlantic 10 men's soccer tournament championship game on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. The game will be nationally televsised on American Sports Network (ASN).
SCOUTING THE FLYERSDayton heads into the title game with a 12-5-3 record overall and two clutch wins over Duquesne and Rhode Island already in the tournament. The Flyers went 5-1-2 in the regular season in the A-10 this season with the lone loss coming to VCU in the finale.
The Flyers boast one of the most prolific attacks in the nation, leading the country in total goals with 51 and scoring offense with 2.55 goals per game. Dayton is only allowing 1.20 goals to opposing squads while out-shooting them (17.5-11.1) and picking up a corner kick advantage (132-105).
2015 A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year
Amass Amankona leads the Flyers with 13 goals, five assists, 31 points, and a .608 shots-on-goal percentage. Fellow senior and first team All-Conference honoree
Maik Schoonderwoerd has added nine goals and six assists while another first team performer
James Haupt has contributed seven goals and five assists. Sophomore goalkeeper
Oliver Hansen has started both games in the A-10 tournament, averaging 1.00 goals against with four saves.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
VCUThe Rams are the hottest team in the conference right now, winning three straight dating back to a 3-2 overtime win at Dayton on Nov. 7. Since that game, VCU has picked up wins over top-seeded George Washington (4-0) and No. 4 seed Fordham (1-0). Head coach Dave Giffard has guided his team to a 7-9-4 record overall in 2015.
VCU scores 1.10 goals per game while allowing 1.13 to opponents. The Rams have been out-shooting opposing teams throughtout the season and have raised their shots-per-game mark to 14.4 in A-10 play.
Leading the Rams is junior Jorge Herranz, who has a team-high five goals and 11 points. Sophomore Rafael Andrade Santos has added four goals and two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Pierre Gardan has owned the spot between the posts with seven shutouts and 51 saves in 16 starts.
THE SERIESThe Flyers and Rams have met twice before in the series history with VCU taking both games, including a 3-2 overtime win in the season finale at Dayton this year, which spoiled the Flyers' regular season title hopes.
LAST OUTINGDayton defeated No. 6 seed Rhode Island 2-1 on Friday after trailing 1-0 early on. The Flyers tied the game up in the final minute of the first half on a goal by Amankona. Senior
Kissima Bojang then clinced a spot in the finals for UD with his goal from outside the box in the 80th minute.
VCU sealed its spot in the championship game with a 1-0 win over No. 4 seed Fordham on Friday as well. SophomoreRafael Andrade Santos ripped a stunning shot from 20 yards out to the upper corner in the 44th minute for the game-winning goal.
CURRIER GETS NO. 300Dayton's
Dennis Currier got his 300th career win as a head coach. In 23 seasons and at three different schools, Coach Currier has logged 460 games as a head coach, posting a .700 winning percentage.
INTO THE RECORD BOOKSThis season, Dayton has scored 51 total goals this season, which is the most in a single season in school history. The Flyer had twice before scored 46 goals back in 2008 and 1975.
2015 ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREESThe Atlantic 10 Conference released its season awards prior to the tournament with seven Flyers picking up accolades. Amankona was named Offensive Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year, as well as first team all-conference. Schoonderwoerd and Haupt joined Amankona on the first team offensively with junior
Lalas Abubakar being named defensively. Senior midfielder
Kissima Bojang was named second team all-conference and freshman
Kennedy Nwabia was named to the All-Rookie team.
Academically, Amankona and Haupt joined senior defender
Andrew Lightner on the Academic All-Conference team, rounding out the awards for Dayton.
LEADING THE WAYThe Flyers are having a stellar season offensively, leading the Atlantic 10 in shots (17.74), points (7.37), goals (2.58), assists (2.21), and corner kicks (6.60). Dayton is also third in goals against average (1.15).
OFFENSIVE POWERHOUSEThe Flyers have been a force on the offensive side of the ball this season, ranking in the top 10 nationally in numerous statistical categories. Dayton currently leads the nation in total goals (51), scoring offense (2.58), points per game (7.37), and total points (140). The Flyers are also second in total assists (42) and shots per game (17.74).
FLYER SUCCESSThe Dayton men's program has an overall record of 469-397-79 and three NCAA tournament appearances in its history. The Flyers are also 130-80-24 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have six conference titles between the regular season and league tournament.
AMANKONA NAMED SENIOR CLASS FINALISTThe 2015 Senior CLASS Award candidates were announced and Dayton's
Amass Amankona is one of 10 male finalists for the national honor. The award is given to one male and female in each sport every year that best exhibits excellence in four areas: classroom, character, community, and competition. Amankona is one of two A-10 candidates and joins Dayton women's soccer's Nicole Waters on the list. Dayton is one of only four schools with both a male and female honoree.
CURRIER'S IMPACTThe head coach of the Flyers has had success at every place he has coached.
Dennis Currier is in his 11th year at Dayton and holds a career record of 300-116-44 in 22 seasons and a 112-67-32 record with the Flyers. His career winning percentage of .701 ranks fifth in the nation amongst active coaches, ahead of programs like Maryland, Stanford, UCLA, and Virginia.
UP NEXTIf victorious on Friday, the Flyers will head to the 2015 NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. The selection show is Monday at 1 p.m. and will be streamed online.
