DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayon Baseball team will open up the 2015 season at the Spartanburg Classic this weekend in South Carolina.

GAME PREVIEW
• The Flyers will start the year off with USC-Upstate on Friday at 4 p.m. The weekend continues with a neutral game against Army on Saturday at 1 p.m., which will be played at Wofford. UD ends the weekend at Wofford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
• The Flyers are coming off the 2014 season in which they went 24-30 with 14 Atlantic 10 wins, 10 road victories, and a trip to the postseason. Head Coach Tony Vittorio is in his 16th season at the helm of UD and is looking to capitalize on the return of seven position players and his top two starting pitchers from 2014.
• USC-Upstate had an up-and-down seaso, going 17-38, including 6-20 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Head Coach Matt Fincher is in his 18th season with the Spartans and is looking to get USCU off to a strong start to the 2015 campaign on Feb. 13.
• Army and Dayton will square off in the second game of the season as the Black Knights look to carry over their success from last year, in which they went 33-18 and 15-5 in conference play. Head Coach Matt Reid is in his first full year in charge after serving as the interim coach last season.
• Wofford had a successful campaign last year with a 32-28 record overall and a 12-14 Southern Conference mark. The Terriers controlled their home field in 2014 with a 21-14 record at Russell C. King Field. Head Coach Todd Interdonato has a veteran squad in his eighth year with Wofford.

WHO TO WATCH - DAYTON
• The Dayton offense batted .266 as a team last year with 109 doubles, 26 home runs, and a .375 slugging percentage. The Flyers drew 157 walks and 95 hit-by-pitches, as well as stealing 91 bases. UD was shutout just twice in 54 games last season and scored double-digit run totals in five contests.
• The returning offensive leaders for UD are senior A.J. Ryan, who batted .338 with 38 RBI, and senior Alex Harris, who had a .333 average, 15 doubles, 32 RBI, and 15 steals.
• Pitchers Noah Buettgen, Charle Dant, and Bradley Horn will get the weekend nods as the starters. Buettgen and Dant both pitched over 100 innings last season while Horn is a junior transfer from Murray State.
• Junior Sam Brunner will serve as the closer for Dayton this season after joining the Flyers from Dodge City C.C.

WHO TO WATCH - THE OPPONENTS
• USC-Upstate hit for a .246 average in 2014, as well as 79 doubles, 10 triples, and 11 home runs while posting a .331 on-base percentage. Senior Erik Samples is the top returner with a. 294 average, 33 RBI, and 17 doubles last year. Sophomore Zach Krider and senior Stephen Dowling combined for 51 RBI as well.
• The Spartans will open the year with their top returning starter in senior Dylan Parker. The 6-0 righty had a 5.35 ERA, 2-5 record, and 51 k's in 12 starts in 2014.
• Army offensively batted .248 last season with 58 doubles, nine home runs, and 98 steals. Junior Jacob Page is the top returning offensive threat with a .297 average and 27 RBI in 2014, while stealing 11 bases and hitting 11 doubles.
• The Black Knights will go with senior Julian Larimer on the mound Saturday, who went 2-2 last season in 15 relief appearances. He posted a 4.55 ERA and struck out 29.
• Wofford batted .249 as a team last year with a .360 slugging percentage and a .350 on-base percentage. The Terriers stole an impressive 153 bases, which ranked first the nation. Junior Alec Paradowski leads the offense with a .280 average, 25 RBI, and 12 steals. Senior James Plaisted added seven home runs and 42 RBI to the cause as well.
• The Terriers will throw left-handed freshman Adam Scott in the final game of the weekend. The Canandaigua, N.Y. native is 6-3, 230 who was named Monroe County League Player of the Year as a senior in high school.

LAST MEETING
Dayton and USC-Upstate faced eachother in the Spartanburg Classic last year where the Spartans defended their home field with a 13-2 victory over the Flyers. Junior Aaron Huesman had a pair of RBI while USC-Upstate's Krider had four RBI.

In 2014, Dayton opened the season with a 14-5 win over Wofford in the same tournament. Huesman had a dominant performance with seven RBI and a 3-for-6 outing while Noah Buettgen earned the win on the mound.

The Flyers last met Army in 2010 at West Point where the Black Knights earned a 14-6 victory over Dayton to open up the season.

FLYERS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH IN A-10
The Atlantic 10 released their 2015 preseason poll and tabbed Dayton to finish sixth this year, after posting that same finish in 2014. The Flyers received one first place vote, and came ahead of Davidson, George Washington, and Fordham in the poll. Saint Louis was picked to win the league and had six first-place votes, while VCU was right behind in second with five first-place votes.

HONORARY FLYER CAMERON NEAL
During the 2013 season, the Dayton Baseball program announced the addition of Cameron Neal to its family. Cameron is a local boy that has battled a brain tumor. He was partnered up with the Flyers through the Friends of Jaclyn foundation. What started out as a young boy meeting with a few players has blossomed into a tight-knit relationship that not only benefits Cameron, but the players as well. With his own locker and uniform, Cameron will be seen at as many of the games as he can attend this season. He is not part of just a community service project, but truly a member of the Dayton Baseball team.
