Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team led for much of the contest on Sunday, but suffered a 9-7 defeat to Wofford in the end.
For the third straight game, the Flyers took the initial lead as lead-off batter
Glenn Jones knocked the second pitch of the contest over the left field fence for a 1-0 Dayton lead. It was the sophomore's first home run of the season.
Senior
Zach Schira continued the inning with an RBI single, scoring senior
Alex Harris to make it a 2-0 ball game.
Wofford cut into the Dayton advantage in the second inning with an RBI double of its own. The Terriers went on to score two more and took their first lead of the contest, 3-2.
Schira continued his productive day with a two-run single in the third frame, putting the Flyers back on top 4-3. A bases loaded walk followed to give UD a two-run lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wofford pulled within a run via an RBI double to right. The Terriers threatened further in the frame, but a diving catch by Harris in centerfield saved what would have been an obvious extra-base hit.
Dayton added to its advantage in the sixth inning when a Wofford error allowed two Flyers to score. That pushed UD's lead to 7-4.
Wofford got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap back to one run. The Terriers managed to tie the game up at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh, forcing Dayton to go to the bullpen.
The Flyers allowed Wofford to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth before a walk put the Terriers ahead 8-7. A Dayton fielding error scored the ninth run for Wofford as well.
Those miscues sent the Flyers back to Dayton with a 9-7 loss.
UD totaled eight hits in the contest, compared to Wofford's 12 and left 10 runners on base. Schira powered the offense with a 2-for-5 day and three RBI while Harris went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Starter
Bradley Horn pitched well in his Dayton debut with seven strikeouts compared to just one walk while allowing six runs in five innings of work. Juniors
Ben Polansky and
Sam Brunner (L, 0-1) saw time on the mound as well in relief for the Flyers. Freshman
Tyson Schnitkey closed out the game by pitching the final two outs of the eighth inning.
The Flyers (0-3) will next take on High Point next weekend for a three-game set.
