Box Score 2 CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – The University of Dayton baseball team won the series opener 5-3 in 14 innings before falling in the night cap, 2-1.
Game 1 – Dayton 5, Morehead State 3  - 14 inningsThe Flyers earned their first win of the season over the span of two days of action as Dayton defeated Morehead State in the series opener 5-3 in 14 innings. Rain delayed the game midway through and the teams finished up the contest the next day.
The first two innings went by with the defenses and starting pitchers keeping the opposing offenses in check.
Morehead State took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly, putting the Flyers in a 1-0 deficit.
Dayton got a run back in the top of the fourth when sophomore
Nick Gobert scored on a Morehead error.
In the fifth, the Eagles had another defensive miscue that allowed sophomore
Brad Burkhart to score, giving Dayton a 2-1 advantage.
Before Morehead batted in the bottom half of the frame, the game was halted. Play picked back up on Sunday afternoon as part of a doubleheader.
With play underway on Sunday, the Eagles took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on, making it 3-2 Morehead lead.
The advantage didn't last long though as sophomore
Nick Gobert hit a shot to left which cleared the fences for a solo home run. It was Gobert's first hit of the season and first career home run, evening the score at 3-3.
The game would go into extra innings as neither team was able to score the deciding run in the ninth.
The Flyers managed to load the bases in the top of the 10
th, but were unable to capitalize.
It wouldn't be until the top of the 14
th that either team would strike as sophomore
Matt Poland ripped an RBI double to right-center, scoring senior
Zach Schira. Sophomore
Robbie Doring then followed with an RBI single of his own, making it a 5-3 contest.
In the end, the Flyers held on and picked up their first win of the season. Dayton totaled seven hits in the game as both teams combined for 38 runners on base. Gobert, Poland, and Doring provided the RBI for UD.
Starting pitcher
Bradley Horn pitched the first four innings of the game, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five. Freshman
Tyson Schnitkey took over pitching responsibilities on Sunday after the 18-hour break. He went two innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
Junior reliever
Sam Brunner had a great outing with four no-hit, shutout innings of work. Freshman
Mason Kutruff (W, 1-0) earned his first collegiate victory with shutout 13
th and 14
th frames.
Game 2 – Dayton 1, Morehead State 2In the second game of the series and day for the Flyers, UD was unable to sweep the set of games after suffering a 2-1 loss to Morehead State.
The scoring started early with a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Cale Dineen that scored senior
A.J. Ryan and gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Morehead State quickly answered though with a pair of runs in the third frame, taking a 2-1 lead of its own.
That score held throughout the rest of the game as Dayton suffered a 2-1 defeat in the second game of the series.
The Flyers managed four hits and only left four stranded, but allowed seven hits to Morehead State. Ryan led the way with a 2-for-3 outing while Dineen provided the lone RBI. Defensively, UD played well without committing a single error.
Starter
Charlie Dant (L, 0-2) pitched seven innings for Dayton, allowing just two runs on six hits while fanning seven batters. Junior
Ben Polansky came in to relieve Dant and threw a shutout eighth inning.
Dayton (1-4) is scheduled to finish up the series with Morehead State Monday at 12 p.m. ET.
