ST. LOUIS – University of Dayton sophomore punter
Sean Smith has been named this week's Pioneer Football League Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 21-10 win over Stetson. He shared the award with Butler placekicker Drew Bevelhimer.
It is the second time this season Smith has been honored by the PFL.
Smith punted seven times for an average of 42.4 yards a punt. Stetson had five possessions start inside its own 20 yard-line, and four of them came after Smith punts.Â
On the year Smith leads the PFL in punting average (41.7). His 10 punts of 50 yards or longer is twice as many as any other PFL punter. He is second in punts inside the 20 (13 to 17) in 12 less punts on the year.Â
He is ninth nationally among FCS punters and is the only sophomore in the top 10.
Smith led the league in average last season as a true freshman (41.7) and was the only freshman to be named First Team All-PFL in 2015.
UD remains home this week, hosting Valparaiso at Welcome Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 5. Game time is 1 p.m. ET. It will Senior Day for the Dayton's 22-man senior class. At halftime, one of those seniors will be named the 2016 recipient of the Lt. Andy Zulli Memorial Trophy, a character-based award that is considered the most prestigious in the Flyer football program.
