CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's soccer team played USL's FC Cincinnati in a spring exhibition on Tuesday and picked up a 1-0 victory over the pro team on the road at Nippert Stadium.
Junior
James Haupt scored the crucial first-half goal to lead the Flyers to the victory.
"We appreciate the opportunity FC Cincinnati provided our program," said Head Coach
Dennis Currier. "It was a great chance for our student-athletes to gain the experience of playing against a professional team. It was an impressive atmosphere at Nippert Stadium. I was very pleased with the effort our team gave last night- work ethic was off the charts. We put together some very good sequences in the first half and were able to score a memorable goal. We found ourselves defending more in the second half but maintained good shape to finish out the game without conceding a goal. Overall, it was a great experience for our team."
Haupt scored the only goal of the game in the first half when his strike from outside the 18-yard box found the top right corner. From there, both teams exchanged good scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the first half. The goalkeepers from each team came up with some big saves.
In the second half, FC Cincinnati dictated the tempo of the game but the Flyers showed resiliency on the defensive end. With good team defending, the Flyers kept the clean sheet.
FC Cincinnati is in its inaugural season as a member of the United Soccer League (USL) and is gearing up for the regular season. The club is led by U.S. Men's National team member and former MLS Cup winner Jon Harkes, who recorded 90 national team appearances, 167 MLS games, and stints in the English Premier League as a player.
Dayton will next place the University of Cincinnati at home on Wednesday, April 13 at Baujan Field.
