DAYTON, Ohio –The 2016 version of the Dayton Flyers baseball team featured eight seniors with a host of younger players earning substantial playing time.
The team played a tough schedule, with two of their opponents (Wright State, Rhode Island) qualifying for the 64-team NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
Despite the tough schedule, the team had many bright spots this year.
Senior
Nick Weybright was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team. Weybright led the team with a .284 batting average in 42 games played. He recorded 38 hits, 21 RBI, and 16 runs scored while primarily playing first base for the Flyers.
Charlie Dant wrapped up a successful career in a Dayton uniform. Dant made 62 appearances on the mound during the past four years, which included five complete games and two shutouts. Dant closed his career in the Dayton record books, finishing first in career starts (52), second in innings pitched (392.2), and fourth in strikeouts (220).
Junior
Robbie Doring was the team's biggest offensive contributor. Doring batted .264 and led Dayton with 57 hits, 40 runs scored, 36 RBI, 13 doubles and eight home runs. He was named the team's MVP for his efforts.
Freshmen Austin Cline and Connor Echols both had solid rookie seasons. Cline pitched in 18 games for Dayton, going 4-4 with a 4.00 ERA. He was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
Echols saw action in 32 games for the Flyers, batting .248 with 28 hits, 16 RBI and 13 runs scored.
During the season, Dayton picked up wins against in-state programs Bowling Green, Miami and Toledo. The Flyers also won a game against VCU, the second place team in the A-10.
However, the highlight of the season came on Senior Day, when the Flyers swept a doubleheader against Davidson.
At the conclusion of the final game, a road win against Fordham, Dayton announced the team awards for the season. Pat Meehan was named Best Practice Player,
Jason Johnson earned the Most Improved Player, Zach Beaver received the Most Valuable Pitcher award,
Robbie Doring earned the Most Valuable Player award, and
Sam Brunner received the Cam10 award.
In addition to the on-the-field accomplishments, the Flyers had success in the classroom.
Mitch Coughlin earned a spot on the A-10 All-Academic Team. He played in 41 games while posting a 3.79 GPA. Coughlin was also named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, along with
Sam Brunner, Austin Cline,
Cale Dineen, Connor Echols,
Nick Gobert,
Matt Poland, Sam Sustersic and
Nick Weybright.
