16th ANNUAL TONY ERNST MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING A BIG SUCCESS

More Than A Dozen Members of UD's 1996 Undefeated Team Were In Attendance

DAYTON -- The University of Dayton football program hosted the 16th Annual Tony Ernst Memorial Golf Outing at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace near Dayton on Friday, June 17.

Ernst, a former quarterback who wore No. 6 and was a 1995 UD graduate, passed away unexpectedly just a few years after his graduation. As a tribute to his spirit and character, the Ernst Family established the Tony Ernst Football Coaching Internship Position in 1999. The position is funded by the annual memorial golf tournament.

"Beautiful weather, 139 golfers and 70 former players ranging from the classes of 2014 to 1956 made the 2016 Ernst Memorial Football outing one of the best ever," Flyer head coach Rick Chamberlin said.  "We were very happy how the day turned out and the amount of money we raised for our two Intern Coaching Positions.  The outing is just another example of how much people care about the UD football program."

More than a dozen members of the 1996 Pioneer Football League Championship team were in attendance to mark the 20th anniversary of the team's perfect 11-0 season.

The foursome of former wide receiver Joe D. Clark, former quarterback B. Jay Dailey, Jay Dailey and former linebacker Ed Plaspohl won the tournament with a 16-under-par round of 56.

Offensive Coordinator Eric Evans helped organize the event and said that this year's outing raised approximately $24,000.

Since the establishment of the Tony Ernst Football Coaching Position, more than $250,000 has been raised.

"It was a great day on so many levels -- for the Ernst Family, for our alums and certainly for Dayton Flyer football," Evans said.  "We really appreciate everyone coming out and supporting our football program."
