DAYTON, Ohio – For over 10 years, University of Dayton Athletics has partnered with Dayton-area YMCAs to host a two-day event called the YMCA Olympics. This year's camp was held successfully on Wednesday and Thursday at the UD track.
Dayton Athletics staff, coaches, and student-athletes volunteered their time to help with a number of events for the campers to participate in, including the 200m dash, football throw, bean bag toss, running long jump, soccer shoot, water balloon sling shot, and more.
Kids from 13 Dayton-area YMCA's were on hand to participate in the event, which included Olympic opening ceremonies and presentations of the YMCA's.
"University of Dayton Athletics' participation in Dayton-area YMCA summer camp programming offers our staff and student-athletes a unique opportunity to connect with our community for a few weeks each year," stated Jeni Gerard, Dayton's director of the event and Learning Specialist. "The Olympics, two days of athletic events involving several hundred children from several local YMCAs, is only successful because coaches, staff and student-athletes put their own needs aside for a few hours to come and play. This event caps off five weeks of team participation in YMCA day camp activities, including Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's and Women's Basketball and Rowing led by coaches and student-athletes. UD Athletics values the partnership we have built with the YMCA because their commitment to changing children's lives aligns with our mission to learn, lead and serve as member's of the greater Dayton community."
