DAYTON, Ohio – A former University of Dayton women's basketball player is competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Former Flyer Marie Rosche, who competed for the Flyers from 2005-09, is playing on the Senegal Women's Basketball National team in Rio de Janeiro. Through two games, the Senegalese are 0-2 after suffering defeats to China and favorites U.S.A. Rosche has appeared in both games for Senegal, which still has games against Canada on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 4:45 p.m. and Spain on Friday, Aug. 12 at 4:45 p.m.
This is the second Olympic appearance for Senegal in the nation's history.
Rosche is a 6-3 center who wears No. 14 for Senegal and currently plays professionally in France for Avenir Chartres.
While at the University of Dayton, Rosche helped the Flyers to 75 wins over her four-year career, playing in 87 games. The Flyers made two WNIT appearances during Roche's junior and senior years, starting a run of nine consecutive postseason appearances.
"Marie was really athletic," said Dayton Head Coach
Jim Jabir. "Her game improved as her career went on. To her credit, she worked really hard to become a better basketball player."
After graduation, she went on to play in Puerto Rico, Germany, and France, with a national team call-up to Qatar as well.
Rosche came to Dayton after a standout career at Westtown High School in Pennsylvania, moving to the United States after her freshman year.
"We like to recruit kids that are offensive minded and are skilled," Jabir stated. "Our emphasis, as a program, is to teach individual instruction. We want kids to get better. We teach our players how to play effectively and develop their game."
