CHICAGO –University of Dayton punter
Sean Smith earned a national honor today for his performance in Saturday's 20-10 win at Drake. He was named the STATS FCS National Special Team Player of the Week.
Smith averaged 43.5 yards per punt on seven kicks. Five of his punts were inside the 20 with no touchbacks. Three of Smith's punts came from inside Drake territory, but when he had the chance, he aired it out. On three boots from his own 25 or deeper, he averaged 56.7 yards a punt. Drake only attempted to return one of his kicks. It was muffed and eventually recovered by Dayton.
On the year, Smith is second in the PFL in yards per punt (41.6) and the Flyers lead the league in net punting (40.1). He has 15 punts inside the 20 with no touchbacks. Smith's career punting average of 41.7 is the best in UD history.
Teammate
Tim Simon, a backup safety, was an Honoarble Mention selection for the STATS Freshman of the Week after his two interceptions on Saturday.
Dayton is now 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in the PFL. This week the Flyers host the league's first-place team, Campbell, who is 3-0 in the PFL and 4-2 overall. It will be the third consecutive week UD will play a team in first place in the Pioneer Football League. Saturday's kickoff at Welcome Stadium is 1 p.m. ET.Â
Prior to Saturday's game, Dayton Athletics is hosting a Fan Fest at Welcome Stadium. Both the Flyer men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced and giving autographs, and five popular food trucks will be on hand. The Fan Fest will run from 11 a.m. ET until game time. Saturday's game will also be UD's annual "Pink Game" to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. The Pink Ribbon Girls will be on hand to host a silent auction fundraiser.
