ST. LOUIS – University of Dayton freshman placekicker
Allen Waltz was named Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week after leading the Flyers to a 36-17 win over Marist on Saturday.
Waltz kicked five field goals, becoming the first Dayton player to do ever it and only the second FCS player to kick five field goals this season. He gave UD a 6-0 lead after the Flyers' first two series, added another in the second quarter, and then scored Dayton's final six points to break a record that had been done nine previous times at UD. Waltz, a freshman from Blue Ash, Ohio and a graduate of Cincinnati Summit Country Day, booted field goals of 19, 31, 30, 21 and 21 yards.
Classmate
Patrick Sandler was the last Flyer to have four field goals in a game when he was named PFL Special Teams Player of the Week after the Southeast Missouri win.
Since taking over the kicking duties at Drake five games ago, Waltz is nine-for-11 in field goals and has also made 12 of 13 PATs. He did not make any point-afters on Saturday as senior
Mike Ruffolo handled all three PATs flawlessly on Senior Day.
Waltz leads the Flyers in scoring (39 points). If he met the minimum number of games played, he would led the PFL in kick scoring per game (7.8) and would be second in FG conversion rate (81.8%).
After three consecutive wins, Dayton is 5-5 on the year and 4-3 in the PFL. After a bye week, UD will close out the season at Valparaiso on Saturday, Nov. 18.Â
