SMITH'S POWER SURGE LEADS TO A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK AWARD

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton baseball player Brandon Smith has been named Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week for his play during the Flyers' five games from April 10-16, the league office announced Monday.

The redshirt freshman hit .429 (6-for-14) on the week, including three home runs in A-10 play against George Mason. The Floyd Knobs, Ind., native had his second two-homer game of the season against the Patriots on Saturday, April 15, going 2-for-4 at the plate with four runs batted in, two runs scored, and a walk in addition to the two round-trippers.

Adding to the impressive week for the rookie was the eight walks Smith drew over the course of the five games. He raised his batting average over 40 points on the week, and now sits with the highest mark among the regular starters (.287) while also leading the team in home runs (7), slugging percentage (.602) and on-base percentage (.449).

The award marks the second time this season that a Flyer rookie has won the A-10 Rookie of the Week award.

Dayton has another busy week ahead on the diamond, playing five total games and four on the road. The lone game at Spectrum Stadium is Wednesday, April 19 against the University of Toledo, scheduled for 4 p.m.
