DAYTON – The University of Dayton Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collaborated with the Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association to volunteer at the 16th annual MVDSA Buddy Walk at Fifth Third Field this past Saturday, Sept. 29.
Dayton athletics has been a regular participant in the Buddy Walk, and each year, student-athletes come with eager anticipation.Â
"It's such an honor to organize the Buddy Walk when you know how many student-athletes look forward to this event every year," said Mallory Kimmell, a UD junior softball player and the 2018 SAAC community service chair. "This unique opportunity is very special to UD athletics because of the Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association's mission that focuses on creating awareness and support for individuals with Down syndrome. We thank Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association team for letting us be a part of something bigger than our sports."
More than 200 UD student-athletes, coaches, and staff volunteered at the Buddy Walk including: baseball, women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, rowing.
"We are so fortunate to have a great partnership with The University of Dayton Athletics," said Cathy Gough, MVDSA special events and development coordinator. "Their athletes show their servant hearts at the Buddy Walk, turning the tables on our teams celebrating their Buddies. They become the cheerleaders for the day and help promote awareness, acceptance, and advocacy for our beloved individuals with Down syndrome."
