Q&A With Former Flyer Rafael Gamboa

Gamboa Now Plays Professionally In Costa Rica

DAYTON – Former University of Dayton men's soccer player Rafael Gamboa is currently playing this season in the top division of Costa Rica's professional league with Universidad de Costa Rica.

Gamboa took some time to talk to us about his career, his time at Dayton, and how he has developed as a player.

1. What was your development like as a player while at Dayton?

"At Dayton I learned how to prepare myself to face difficult environments like different types of weather and very physical players. This program taught me to be competitive every day, something we lack in Costa Rica during our youth development. I learned that soccer is not just a fun game but also a competitive sport. I faced the challenge that my soccer skills were not enough at this level and to become a better player I had to change my habits towards my fitness."

2. What is the one thing you miss the most about Dayton and/or the men's soccer program?

"There are a lot things I miss about Dayton. The first thing that comes to my mind are my teammates. The chemistry was amazing and I made a lot of good friends. However, we were competitive with one another which is great to become better. I liked how Dayton attracts many international players and it was amazing to learn from other cultures. Another big one is to play at Baujan Field with the Red Scare at your side."

3. How have you grown as a player since leaving Dayton?

"I had to become more versatile and patient to get the opportunity to play. Also, playing and practicing with professional players allows you to absorb knowledge that you don't get by playing at college soccer level. I'll say my biggest improvement has been my decision making and my comprehension of the game."

4. What is one thing about playing professionally that you didn't know before going pro?

"The level of competition is way higher because the players do everything to defend their work. Sometimes you don't know who is a friend of yours. Also, the social media is more destructive than I thought and you have to be ready for any type of criticism."

5. How do you feel about your play this season?

"I feel very happy. It's been my best season so far. I was able to cross some things of my bucket list like playing against the best teams of our National league. I was able to put my name out there and match myself with very good players. By the end of the season I felt very confident with my game. I am very grateful for the people that trusted me and supported me to achieve this results."

Gamboa last played for the Flyers in 2016 after a four-year career in which he totaled 62 games, four goals, and 13 assists in midfield.
