NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forward
Obi Toppin has earned his fifth weekly honor from the Atlantic 10 this season. Toppin was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for his performance in a pair of Dayton wins over Davidson on the road and Saint Louis at home last week.
Toppin, a redshirt freshman from Ossining, N.Y., had double-doubles in both Dayton wins last week.
He had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win at Davidson that broke the Wildcats' 17-game homecourt winning streak. He scored four of Dayton's last five points in the one-point win at Davidson, draining both free throws with 2:41 left and putting back his own miss with 34 seconds to go. Toppin then tallied 11 points with 10 rebounds in the Saint Louis win.
In the two games, he averaged 14.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists. His seven assists (three at Davidson, four vs. SLU) were with just two turnovers this week. He tied the Dayton single-season dunk record (66) in the Saint Louis game.
Toppin is fourth nationally in FG% (.664, 156-235), and third in dunks. He is also UD's second-leading scorer (13.7) and third-leading rebounder (5.4). In addition to his dunks, Toppin is shooting .549 (90-164) on non-dunk field goal attempts. He is also tied for second on the team in free throw percentage (.732, 52-71).
This is Toppin's fifth A-10 weekly honor, the most of anyone this season. Fordham's Nick Honor has been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week four times, and no player has earned more than three Player of the Week accolades.
Dayton is 18-9 overall and is in third place in the A-10 with a 10-4 record. This week, the Flyers are at UMass on Tuesday and back home on Friday against Rhode Island. Both games tip off at 7 p.m. ET.
